Event 4 - Color, Light, Motion Episode 10

This weekend I attended Ted Victoria’s presentation about his work about using physics and light. This event was hosted by Professor Vesna, who informed us that there was a common theme of using light and projectors to represent life-like images (Vesna).

For example, Ted Victoria took a projector and put it inside an empty building in his hometown. The projector was shining shadows of fish swimming, so it looked like there were brine shrimp swimming inside the building, making it an aquarium. This garnered a lot of attention from people and Ted Victoria often found that people were scared of his artwork (Victoria).

The way Ted Victoria accomplished these shadows and projections is by using a projector, actual shrimp, and mirrors to reflect the light and make shadows. Victoria seems to have a strong background in engineering since he was able to build his own projectors and use solar panels, aligning mirrors and lenses to the perfect angle to display and magnify the brine shrimp swimming on all the walls of the building. This is where his physics knowledge was applied, since Ted Victoria had to calculate the angle of reflections and display different colors by using light’s different wavelengths (Altiere).

Overall, it was interesting to see how projectors and physics were used in art. Although I did not enjoy this event as much as the from forces to forms series I attended this quarter, I appreciate the work and thought that was put into Ted Victoria’s projects. I don’t really understand the motive behind scaring children and people of his hometown, but I guess whatever attracts attention makes an artist’s career valid. I would recommend this event to anyone who is interested in horror movies and physics.
